Cultivating Leadership -- Your Journey from Gakusei to Sensei within the Mitosis Community
Exciting news for every Mitosis community member! We're introducing a new way for you to grow, contribute, and be recognized within our vibrant ecosystem. Our Community Leadership Pathway offers everyone---yes, everyone---the chance to develop their skills, make a real impact, and potentially become a community leader.
The Path to Mastery
On November 1, 2024, we're launching our new Community Leadership Pathway, offering a clear progression towards becoming a Sensei. This pathway consists of three distinct roles:
-
Gakusei (学生) - The Learner: This is where everyone begins their journey. As a Gakusei, you'll engage in discussions, participate in community events, and help fellow members when possible. The key focus at this stage is continuous learning and growth within the community.
-
Daigakusei (大学生) - The Contributor: As you become more active and knowledgeable, you may progress to the Daigakusei role. Here, you'll provide in-depth assistance to Gakusei members, contribute original content and ideas, and help organize community projects.
-
Sensei (先生) - The Master: This is the pinnacle of community leadership. Senseis guide the community's direction, represent us in external collaborations, develop key initiatives, and mentor Daigakusei members.
Enter the Dojo: Gakusei
The Gakusei role serves as the entry point for active community participants. Here's how you can earn this role:
-
Praise Accumulation:
- Receive a minimum of 5 unique praises over a two-week period from at least 3 different community members; or receive an average quantification score of at least 30 (out of 100) from a minimum of 3 unique praises (quantity and quality are both important here).
-
Selection and Review Process:
- Every two weeks, users with the Daigakusei role will review the users who've met the Praise requirement(s) above to ensure no foul play.
Remember, becoming a Gakusei is not just about accumulating praises, but about making meaningful contributions to the community. The Praise system helps us recognize and quantify these contributions objectively.
Welcome to the Ryu: From Gakusei to Daigakusei
The Daigakusei role is a new addition to our community structure, replacing the previous "TA" role. It represents a significant step up in responsibility and recognition. Here's how Gakusei members can progress to Daigakusei:
-
Time as Gakusei: Maintain the Gakusei role for at least 2 weeks.
-
Praise Giving:
- Demonstrate active engagement in the Praise system by giving at least 5 high-quality praises to other community members within a two-week period.
- This requirement ensures that potential Daigakuseis are actively recognizing and appreciating others' contributions, fostering a positive community environment.
-
Praise Receiving:
- Receive a minimum of 10 unique praises over a two-week period from at least 5 different community members; or receive an average quantification score of at least 30 (out of 100) from a minimum of 5 unique praises.
-
Selection and Review Process:
- Current TAs will automatically receive the Gakusei role.
- Every two weeks, users with the Daigakusei role will review the users who've met the Praise requirement(s) above to ensure no foul play.
Advancement to Daigakusei is based on merit, community impact, and leadership potential. It's not just about time spent in the community, but the quality and consistency of your contributions, as well as your active participation in recognizing others through the Praise system. This approach allows regular users who consistently help and engage positively with the community to become Daigakuseis, regardless of their technical expertise or official role.
Attain Satori: From Daigakusei to Sensei
The Sensei role is reserved for exceptional community leaders who have consistently demonstrated their expertise, commitment, and ability to foster a positive community environment. Here's how Daigakusei members can become Senseis:
-
Time as Daigakusei: Maintain an active Daigakusei role for at least 2 weeks.
-
Praise Giving:
- Demonstrate exceptional engagement in the Praise system by giving at least 10 high-quality praises to other community members within a two-week period.
- This requirement ensures that potential Senseis are actively recognizing and appreciating others' contributions across all levels of the community.
-
Praise Receiving:
- Receive at least 15 unique praises over a two-week period from at least 7 different community members; or receive an average quantification score of at least 30 (out of 100) from a minimum of 7 unique praises.
- This criterion helps identify Daigakuseis who consistently provide exceptional value and leadership.
-
Consistent Contributions: Regularly provide high-quality contributions to the community, as evidenced by the quality and quantity of praises received.
-
Nomination Process:
- Nominations occur every 2 weeks and can come from existing Senseis, community moderators, or team members.
- Existing Senseis initiate nomination polls in designated threads.
- Nominators must provide specific examples of the nominee's impact, including references to notable praises given and received.
-
Selection Process:
- Every two weeks, Senseis will review nominations and vote on Daigakusei members who they believe deserve the Sensei role.
- Candidates must meet the Praise giving and receiving criteria mentioned above to be considered.
-
Review Process:
- Nominations are reviewed by existing Senseis on a bi-weekly basis.
- Reviews are solely merit-based, considering the quality and quantity of praises given and received, as well as overall community impact.
-
Voting:
- Final selection is made through a voting process involving existing Senseis and selected community leaders.
- A minimum approval threshold of 75% positive votes must be met.
Advancement to Sensei is based on exceptional merit, community impact, and proven leadership. It represents one of the highest levels of recognition within our community. The incorporation of the Praise system in the criteria ensures that Senseis are not only outstanding contributors but also active cultivators of a positive and appreciative community culture.
Maintaining Your Sensei Status
To ensure the continued growth and quality of our community, we have established specific requirements for maintaining Sensei status. While these rules are firm, they're designed with the understanding that you're a volunteer dedicating your valuable time and energy.
Your Sensei role is subject to a monthly review and may be revoked if you do not meet the following requirements:
-
Engage and actively guide others in the Mitosis Discord at least once per week.
-
Distribute karma to at least one user per week.
-
Participate in nomination discussions at least once every two weeks, including:
- Contributing to nominations or promoting others for contribution-based roles
- Voting on nominations using the provided poll system
-
Participate in monthly Praise Quantification rounds. Please note:
- Missing more than three rounds in a year without prior notice may result in a role review.
- Missing two consecutive rounds without prior notice may result in a role review.
-
Demonstrate exceptional engagement in the Praise system by giving at least 10 high-quality praises to community members outside of the #sensei channel on a bi-weekly basis.
-
Maintain a chat volume of at least 10 messages on a bi-weekly basis in the Mitosis Discord channels.
We understand that life can sometimes get hectic. If you anticipate difficulty meeting these requirements, please reach out. We're here to support you and can work together to find solutions.

Emeritus Sensei
The Emeritus Sensei status recognizes the valuable contributions of former Senseis who are no longer able to maintain the active engagement required of the role. This status allows us to honor their past efforts while ensuring the Sensei role remains a symbol of current, active leadership within our community.
Criteria for Emeritus Sensei Status:
-
Regular Review:
- Sensei status is reviewed every 2 weeks to ensure continued active participation.
- This review considers engagement levels, contribution quality, and fulfillment of Sensei responsibilities.
-
Inactivity:
- Senseis who become inactive or unable to meet the required level of engagement may be moved to "Emeritus Sensei" status.
- Inactivity is generally defined as failing to meet the specific requirements outlined in our Sensei Onboarding Guide over a 2-week period.
-
Voluntary Step Down:
- Senseis may request to be moved to Emeritus status if they anticipate a period of reduced activity due to personal or professional commitments.
Implications of Emeritus Status:
-
Recognition:
- Emeritus Senseis retain a special role in the community, acknowledging their past contributions.
- Their "Sensei" role is replaced with an "Emeritus Sensei" role.
-
Advantages:
- Some Sensei advantages may be retained, such as access to certain exclusive channels or events, at the discretion of community leadership. Emeritus Senseis will be recognized for their past contributions in proportion to their time as a Sensei.
Path to Reactivation:
Emeritus Senseis have the opportunity to regain active Sensei status through a process that demonstrates their renewed engagement and impact within the community. Here's the path to reactivation:
-
Express Intent:
- Notify current Senseis of the desire to regain the Sensei role.
-
Engagement Period:
- Demonstrate renewed active engagement over a 4-week period.
- This includes participating in discussions, helping community members, and contributing to projects.
-
Praise Giving:
- During the 4-week engagement period, give at least 15 high-quality praises to community members.
- This requirement ensures that reactivating Senseis are actively recognizing and encouraging contributions across the community.
-
Praise Receiving:
- Accumulate at least 20 unique praises over the 4-week period
- These praises should come from at least 8 different community members, demonstrating broad impact and respect within the community.
- This criterion helps verify that the Emeritus Sensei is providing valuable contributions and leadership during their reactivation period.
-
Review Process:
- Undergo a review by current Senseis and community leadership.
- This review assesses recent contributions, praise metrics, and the ability to fulfill active Sensei responsibilities.
- The review will consider both the quantity and quality of praises given and received, as well as the overall impact on the community during the engagement period.
-
Reintegration:
- Upon approval, transition back to full Sensei status with all associated responsibilities and advantages.
- If the Praise criteria are met but there are concerns about full reactivation, a conditional reactivation period of an additional 4 weeks may be implemented, with specific goals set for the Emeritus Sensei to achieve.
The incorporation of Praise criteria in the reactivation process ensures that Emeritus Senseis demonstrate not only their renewed engagement but also their active participation in fostering a positive community culture. This approach maintains the high standards of the active Sensei role while providing a clear, measurable path for those seeking to return to full engagement.
